Contango Restaurant at Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Majestic Hotel KL is our favourite place whether as staycation place or for buffets during special occassions. It was a long time since I had lunch/dinner buffet at Contango which was about 4 years ago since I had the buffet dinner there with Japanese food and even lobster! Hence the price of RM118 (before tax is really worth the price considering the myriad variety of food, which rivals even the one at Four Seasons and the other 5 star hotels in KL which normally costs RM200++ for CNY buffet.

They actually gave us a Yee Sang platter with salmon for the traditional lou sang. There was a special promotion of RM118 per pax, Buy 3 free 1 for CNY Weekdays buffet lunch too.

This time round, we went with my parents since I am not going back to our hometown during Chinese New Year - Year of Tiger 2022. It was their first time visiting Majestic Hotel KL so obviously we went on a phototaking frenzy with dad.

What I love about Contango is the heavenly sinful spread of desserts, pastries and cakes which always win over any other 5 Star Hotel, hands down for not only the instagrammable cakes that many other places can do too but they taste as good as they look! You will totally feel like you are eating cakes in a sophisticated fine dining pastry cafe! My personal favourites were definitely the more unique ones that look and taste incredble too : Matcha Lemon, Lemon Tiramisu, Carrot Tiramisu, Raspberry and Mango in layers, Strawberry Cheese Cake, . They chef is very creative with cuter inventions as the ones they used to serve were of too large portions and cause wastage when girls like me love to order everything for the sake of trying: Berries and Pistachio Frangipani, Mixed Fruit Pavlova. There are a few Chinese New Year influence in the desserts such as Honeydew Mandarin Orange Pudding, Pineapple Tart Cake, Mandarin Orange Cheese Cake, Orange Chocolate Cake and also Lemon Cheese cake. The Peanut Butter Mousse Cake,  and Caramel Cheese cakes were equally good too. The mousse in cocktail glasses were quite special with pandan mousse, blueberry pudding (my favourite) and several others that I didn't get chance to try due to stomach space constraint. The Rolled Red Velvet cake in mousse style was so different as I never liked red velvet before. Due to Chinese New Year, there were the traditional cookies like Kuih Bahulu, Kuih Kapit rolled up, Pineapple Tarts, Fortune Cookies.

My mum kept asking why Majestic Hotel KL didn't put up much elaborate CNY Decorations that were expected for Malaysian hotels and even the buffet lacked that. The only thing odd is that Contango seafood area solely serve prawns instead of serving the ubiquitious muscles, huge prawns, crabs, oysters and also even mini lobster 4 years ago.

What we love about the buffet are the Italian fare. There were freshly oven baked pizzas with Malaysian influence such as satay pizza, chicken pizza and etc. There were also al dente pasta like Beef Ragu Fettucinne, Seafood Aglio Olio etc. The onion rings were fried till crispy. The grilled vegetables like zucchini, eggplant etc were tasty too. There were also beef and freshly made roasted lamb. MY favourite was the shepherd pie and it was my first time having this in buffet.

Chinese New Year Fare with fried prawns, fish fillets, chicken, broccoli with fatt choi moss and dried oysters. The dim sum is so-so only with 2 choices of pau or siew mai.

Besides the beautiful desserts at Majestic Hotel which rival the rest of the 5 Star Hotel Contendees, Japanese fare really made the international buffet worth the money with Salmon sashimi, sushi, wakame, chirashi in cute portions.

The Malaysian Fare that Majestic is famous for that one of us cannot help getting second portions of the fish curry! There are many types of curries like nangka curry, mussel curries etc. I forgot to save space in the tummy for the rojak Penang.

The other point that made this restaurant win hands down compared to even huge expensive giants like Four Seasons and the more affordable Eastin Hotel is that there is free flow of Dilmah Tea where you can pick your own sachets like Peppermint, Darjeeling, Jasmine etc with a side of lemon and sugar cubes whereas Four Seasons Hotel KL buffet Harney's tea is chargeable! They also have 3 juices with unique flavours compared to merely apple and orange juice - Fruit Punch, Calamansi and also Rosselle! The Coffee counter is the most popular as there are barristas making freshly grounded coffee with coffee craft or even hot chocolate if you cannot take coffee!
